Run free my girl....

Yesterday afternoon Lady crossed over to the bridge. She began to shut down, her organs attacked by the evil cancer. The last and kindest mercy was necessary sooner that I had planned, but there was no doubt what I had to do for my dear, sweet girl. She passed in my arms, free of her pain, knowing how much she was loved. I will miss her and remember her for the rest of my life.
I can't thank you all enough for your kind words. So many questions and doubts flood your mind as you contemplate the gut-wrenching options. I found strength and light in every one of your sincere messages. As far as blog-land goes, I will always be known as KT and Lady; a lifelong reminder of my first, entirely digital Golden who inspired so many of these pages. Here is one of the many beautiful quotes and thoughts that were sent my way.

"We who choose to surround ourselves with lives even more temporary than our own, live within a fragile circle; easily and often breached. Unable to accept its awful gaps, we would still live no other way. We cherish memory as the only certain immortality, never fully understanding the necessary plan."  -- Irving Townsend

A Young Dog Once Again

You're giving me a special gift, So sorrowfully endowed,
And through these last few cherished days,
Your courage makes me proud.
But really, love is knowing when your best friend is in pain,
And understanding earthly acts Will only be in vain.
So looking deep into your eyes, Beyond, into your soul,
I see in you the magic that will Once more make me whole.
The strength that you possess, Is why I look to you today,
To do this thing that must be done, For it's the only way.
That strength is why I've followed you,
And chose you as my friend,
And why I've loved you all these years...My partner till the end.
Please, understand just what this gift you're giving, means to me,
It gives me back the strength I've lost, And all my dignity.
You take a stand on my behalf, for that is what friends do.
And know that what you do is right, for I believe it, too.
So one last time, I breathe your scent,
and through your hand I feel,
The courage that's within you, to grant me this appeal.
Cut the leash that holds me here dear friend, and let me run,
Once more a strong and steady dog, my pain and struggle done.
And don't despair my passing, for I won't be far away,
Forever here, within your heart, and memory I'll stay.
I'll be there watching over you, your ever-faithful friend,
And in your memories I'll run….a young dog once again.a

A Special Place

You have a special place, Dear Lord
That I know you'll always keep.
A special place reserved for dogs,
To peacefully fall asleep.

A place with fluffy pillows,
And a yard for hiding bones,
With maybe a little babbling creek,
That rushes over stones.

With wide green fields and flowers,
For those who never knew
Of running, playing freely
Under sky of perfect blue.

Lord, I know you keep this special place,
And so, to you I pray
For one oh so special dog
Who came to you today.

She was full of strength and love,
And so very, very wise.
The puppy look she once had,
This morning left hereyes.

She will be dearly missed, Lord,
This special love of mine.
But now, she will romp and play
In your land that's so divine.

Speak to my baby softly, please
With a hug and warm hello.
She’s a special gift to you, Dear Lord
From me - who loves her so.

Our hearts go out to you. We lost our dear Sherman at age 4 to cancer. He was a husky, but I always called him "my golden boy" , after his beautiful golden-red coat. We had to let him go earlier than planned, too, so we know how it is impossible to watch the one you love suffer so, when they are ready to leave. You gave Lady the gift of freedom.
God bless you, and watch over her till you meet again.

"You can shed tears that she is gone,
or you can smile because she has lived.
You can close your eyes and pray that she'll come back,
or you can open your eyes and see all she's left.
Your heart can be empty because you can't see her,
or you can be full of the love you shared.
You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday,
or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday.
You can remember her only that she is gone,
or you can cherish her memory and let it live on.
You can cry and close your mind,
be empty and turn your back.
Or you can do what she'd want:
smile, open your eyes, love and go on" ~ David Harkens, British Poet

KT,
You and Lady shared love, because of you the last chapters of her life story were the happiest that they could have been. She will always be a part of your soul and heart. You made a decision that expresses the ultimate love; Lady's star will shine brightly in the heavens.

The Last Battle
If it should be that I grow frail and weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then will you do what must be done,
For this – the last battle – can’t be won.
You will be sad I understand,
But don’t let grief then stay your hand,
For on this day, more than the rest,
Your love and friendship must stand the test.
We have had so many happy years,
You wouldn’t want me to suffer so.
When the time comes, please, let me go.
Take me to where to my needs they’ll tend,
Only, stay with me ‘til the end
And hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see.
I know in time you will agree
It is a kindness you do to me.
Although my tail its’ last has waved,
From pain and suffering I have been saved.
Don’t grieve that it must be you
Who has to decide this thing to do;
We’ve been so close – we two – these years,
Don’t let your heart hold any tears.

KT, we didn't know Lady as we have not come across your blog before but it is so obvious she was loved not just by you but by many, many residents of Blog ville and she will be missed. You are in our thoughts and prayers at such a difficult and painful time in your lives.
Adopting a senior is such a wonderful thing to do, even though we know our time with them is limited they bring so much joy into our lives. I know because I have had a senior forever foster and now have two adopted seniors. They have taught me so much, wanted so little and given so much as I am sure Lady did for you. Knowing they are loved, wanted and cared for gives them peace and contentment and security which is all any of us want.

Bless you for loving her
All our love

I, too, read about Lady on Dog Daze. I have owned three Labrador Retrievers over the last 26 years. Two of them I have had to put to sleep and now I have Molly. I think only a dog lover who has had to part with a dear animal can truly understand what you are going through right now. May you find comfort in knowing you gave Lady a good home and a good life. God bless you.
