The Dream

I have recurring dreams about my dogs. Sometimes they are the stars, sometimes just bit players. Most of the time, the images of dogs in my dream are a little mixed up. They never look exactly like any one of the Goldens in my life, but they always have Golden features. It’s October 22, 2012 and I had another vivid dream this morning. As usual, I’m the star of my dream, drifting around some familiar, but unidentifiable location, losing my pants, trying to tee up a golf ball and hit it, but there is no room to swing or some other bizarre, frustrating circumstance. This morning was not any different, finding myself in a historic college dorm or McMenamins type hotel, talking to Chandler and Ross about god knows what (I don’t even watch Friends anymore), ducking into a room to change my clothes and hoping the occupants didn't return to catch me. During all of the strange interactions and weird activities, I was somehow aware that one of my dogs was with me. After changing my clothes in the room that wasn't mine, I walked down a hall and began searching for my dog (he wasn't in the room with me), asking strangers in the hotel, whose face I saw, but didn’t know, if they have seen Devo! At that moment Devo became “the dog” for this episode.Immediately I began earnestly searching for Devo; peeking in rooms and hallways, crawling in cubby holes and through kitchens, seeing strangers, but no dogs. Then I went outside and called his name once. I saw a dog in the distance, camouflaged by tall grass and reeds trotting back and fourth making progress, moving closer to me. He was a thin Golden with a fox’s tail; obviously not Devo. I then turned and began calling Devo’s name loudly exactly like I've called him thousands of times. I could feel my vocal chords performing this familiar call; it was so real. Then I heard him reply! It was his bark – three times. I knew I found him. Then I woke up.
Devo
I slept in today after a long drive yesterday, returning from a visit with family in Salem OR, sleeping in a strange bed and now welcoming my familiar, comfortable home field slumber advantage. It was one of those dreams I have the last two hours in the morning after I get up to pee, pet Easton and slide back into bed. I've had a few dreams in the last couple of years where I vividly call one of my dogs in my sleep. This is the first time one of them has answered. So perfectly accurate was the vocalization of Devo’s reply, he could have been standing next to me. Then a couple of hours ago, I saw the picture below posted on Facebook. It not only motivated me to document the dream, but it’s exactly how I pictured the Rainbow Bridge to look when I arrive. Sunny would be in charge, Lady would be the matriarch, Cosmo making sure everybody was happy and Devo (who was happiest when he had a job to do) would be the messenger – always busy insuring the link between heaven and earth passed through the bridge. If Devo felt the need, he could send the message: “Here we are, here we are”. I hear you my pal, I hear you.

Saturday with Buddy

Our fun loving Lab friend Buddy came over with his humans to spend a snowy Saturday with Easton. Buddy has a rich history with the house Goldens; Devo, Lady and now Easton. Buddy is a wild and crazy guy who is very social and loves everybody. He and Easton got along very well and enjoyed each other's company as much as two big, play crazy retrievers can inside the house (it was plain nasty outside). Buddy doesn't hold still for more than 2 seconds, but I did manage to snap a picture of him and Easton together. Here is the Saturday picture along with a couple of favorites from the past.

Notice the similar body language displayed by Easton and Devo. Just before each picture was taken, Buddy had performed one of his classic, indoor zoomy displays!! They're thinking, "where does he get the energy?".

Easton and Buddy - having been bribed with the proper
amount of dried liver treats

A match made in heaven - they really loved hanging out together

Devo and Buddy - Devo was in the winter of his life and tolerated this
Tasmanian Devil of a puppy. As you can see from the previous pictures,
Buddy grew up to be a handsome, sweet boy...loved by all.

Devo's Rock

Devo on his rock - Dec.2006

Lady on Devo's rock - Dec.2009
Sedona, AZ, Oak Creek - the shoreline behind the dogs is Red Rock State park, very close to the ranger booth at the entrance. Devo's rock sits on rare creek front private property. I'll bet the Ruby Red dog knows right where this is! It is a beautiful place. Devo was asking permission to jump in. Lady had already tested the rain swollen creek.

Devo - Everybody's Pal

It's been three years today since Devo lost his fight with cancer. I have to say that time (and Lady) have helped smooth the emotional rough edges of his departure. I still think about him every day. That's just how it is with our heart dogs. You all know what I mean, so I'll just get to the nostalgic pictures and say thanks to all our friends who stop by to see what's happening with Lady and/or what might have been on my mind that day. If you happen to have your speakers on, I'd like to thank Waylon and Roy for writing the perfect songs.

Shout out to Ben (the gentle one) and his peeps for turning me on to this wonderful observation by Cheryl Zuccaro.

“It came to me that every time I lose a dog they take a piece of my heart with them. And every new dog who comes into my life gifts me with a piece of their heart. If I live long enough, all the components of my heart will be dog, and I will become as generous and loving as they are.”

The funny puppy grew up

I watched a very cute video on YouTube called "Breakfast at Ginger's". For you that haven't seen it:

Breakfast at Ginger's video

There are always other videos featured on the sidepanels of YouTube: sleepy puppies, Golden puppy this and Golden puppy that. Well, that got me to thinking about my last Golden puppy and how funny he was; growing up to be such a handsome boy and all. His name is Devo and like MaxMom and her Max, he was MY heart dog.

Devo 6 weeks old

Devo 10 years old - still a puppy at heart

The beau-beau guitar

A 1950s vintage Gibson acoustic guitar found at a pawn shop was the canvas for this amazing portrait done by Cosmo and Devos' favorite Aunt Lisa. Lisa and Uncle Jeff would dog sit every couple of months after we moved back to Seattle from Coeur d'Alene. They got to know the beau-beaus intimately. The guitar and the portrait was arranged by my wife Andi as a 10 anniversary gift in 2005 when the dogs were still with us. I was SO surprised and blown away by the incredible likeness of both dogs. Want to mention that Lisa is not a professional, just a very gifted and generous person. I will always treasure it. I just recently got around to taking a decent picture of the guitar. My fur-kids are with me every time I play.

Ball control - it's everything !

Throughout their life together, Cosmo and Devo always had the ball control thing clearly worked out in their minds. Cosmo had it, Devo wanted it. As you can see, it started early. Devo was ball obsessed. Cosmo acted like she didn't care, but always ended up with it. Cosmo could never out run Devo for the ball.....never. Didn't matter, because somehow she could trick him into relinquishing anything he was retrieving. When Cosmo got older and really slowed down, he would drop the ball short so she could pick it up and carry it the rest of the way. It's just the way they thought it was suppose to work. That was just fine with me.

Water retrieving was a whole 'nother story. We'll save that for another post!
